Holdings

Over 2,700 linear metres in all media, including publications, clippings, photographs, films, audio and video recordings, and electronic records.

Holdings are accessible to researchers, subject to the restrictions of Ontario's Privacy Act/Regulations. Finding aids are available for all records and papers.

College Archives

The College Archives keeps the permanently valuable records and other material relating to George Brown College, its antecedent bodies, and associated organizations and individuals. These materials document the College's activities and contribution.

They include:

  • Provincial Institute of Trades, (PIT), 1952-1968
  • Provincial Institute of Trades and Occupations, (PITO), 1963-1968
  • Nightingale School of Nursing, 1959-1973
  • Regional School for Nursing Assistants - Toronto, 1946-1990
  • St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing (student records only), 1922-1974
  • St. Michael's Hospital School of Health Records Administration, 1937-1987
  • Student Administrative Council (SAC), 1966-

Since its formation in 1967, George Brown College has absorbed:

  • four former Toronto Board of Education Adult Education Centres and
  • five Toronto-area Schools of Nursing (St. Joseph's, St. Michael's, Toronto General, Atkinson [Toronto Western] and Nightingale);
  • and has operated at 15 campus locations in Toronto.

The G.B.C. Archives is also the official records repository for the:

  • Colleges Ontario [formerly the Association of Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology of Ontario (ACAATO)], 1967- established to address the system-wide needs and concerns of the province's CAATs, and support research and planning, inter-college programs and professional development; and the
  • Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), 1967- the co-ordinating body for inter-collegiate sports between Ontario's CAATs.

Special collections of corporate and personal papers include:

  • Louis Fine, LL.D. Papers [labour relations], 1919-1973
  • College-level education-related theses/research materials.
